Guide to Caravan Insurance in SA
Why do I need caravan insurance?
Many South Africans spend their holidays out in the wild enjoying nature in caravans or tents. During that time you will see SUVs or 4×4 trucks out on the road towing caravans to game parks and other such scenic destinations. While on a camping holiday with your loved ones, give yourself peace of mind by taking insurance. Besides covering the caravan from accidental damage, this kind of policy covers many other risks.
What does caravan insurance cover?
Should your wagon cause injuries to other people or damage to their property, this policy will take care of the costs involved. A policy will compensate your for loss or damage to the caravan by fire or an explosion. Even if a natural disaster such as a flood or hailstorm causes the damage, you will be able to make a claim. The insurer will replace your caravan if someone steals it.
Additional cover benefits
Another category of insurance covers the contents of a caravan as well as its accessories. You then have cover for damage to or loss of your camping beds, tables, chairs, lamps and so on. You can also put an air conditioning unit under this policy if you have one installed in your Jurgens. Personal items of the caravan policyholder and their family members including clothing, laptops and mobile devices can be added to the cover.
Depending on who your insurer is, your insurance will remain active even when you venture into other southern African countries. In Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Zambia and Malawi the MiWay caravan insurance still covers policyholders against the above risks.
Again, depending on who your preferred insurer is, you can be covered for injury or death while towing or living in your caravan. Budget offers a R50,000 cover for death and injury.
You will also be entitled to emergency roadside assistance if you need it. Should your caravan require towing to a garage after mechanical failure or an accident, MiWay will cover the costs involved. If your towing vehicle suffers a flat tyre or a dead battery or if you accidentally lock your keys in the car, MiWay will provide the assistance you need. Insurance providers will usually provide a hotline members can call whenever they need such assistance. If you don’t reach them through this number some insurers will not provide assistance.
